Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
