Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
