A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
