In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
